Historical background

Wrocław University of Technology (Politechnika Wrocławska) was founded in 1945. The first group of Polish academics, mostly from Lvov, came to Wrocław on the 9th and 10th of May, 1945, three days after the capitulation of Festung Breslau. The University was housed in the buildings of the former Technische Hochschule Breslau, which had existed since 1910. The first lecture was held on the 15th of November, 1945, and since then that day has been celebrated as the University's anniversary.

Education

At present, Wrocław University of Technology has 32,274 students studying in Wrocław and at its three branches located in the largest towns of the region: Legnica, Wałbrzych and Jelenia Góra. It employs a staff of almost 4,200 (including 1,679 academic teachers), which makes the university the largest employer in Wrocław; it has about 270 buildings with modern laboratories, workshops, libraries and large and small lecture theatres and rooms, equipped with audio-visual and multimedia devices; it has a number of technical workshops, self-transport and repair bases, and a rich social, sport and recreation base. To date, apr. 90,000 students have graduated from Wrocław University of Technology with M.Sc. or B.Sc. degrees, and 4,324 with Ph.D. degrees; of the latter group, 694 have qualified as assistant professors.

New, extremely ambitious tasks have been undertaken by the university, aimed at developing and expanding educational possibilities as determined by inter-disciplinary sciences, technical progress, economic globalisation and fast access to information. Thus, Wrocław University of Technolog's proposed didactic programmes of B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D. and postgraduate studies enable the university not only to pass on professional knowledge, but also to shape students' ability to formulate and solve problems independently.
